St. Patrick's Hospital

An inner city psychiatric hospital of about 300 beds on a six acre site, founded over 250 years ago by Jonathan Swift, needed to re-plan its physical plant and set new directions in care giving for the next 25 years.
KMAI, working with another Toronto firm, conducted a detailed program of research and analysis of functional requirements. The hospital comprised original 18th century buildings, now historically designated, as well as numerous building additions dating from the 19th century through the 20th century.

The Master Plan Study recommended the renovation of some buildings, demolition of others and construction of new facilities.  A comprehensive implementation plan was also developed to facilitate on-going hospital operations while construction was in progress. The first two phases of the implementation involved the renovations of the historical 1745 building and the 1975 building.

The 1975 Building was renovated on a floor by floor basis. The three wards totalled 100 beds. The renovation took place while the existing facilities were kept in full operation.

KMAI carried out detailed site and building surveys and developed the hospital’s functional plans into comprehensive architectural designs. An innovative new building of approximately 16,000 sq.ft. was developed to house the hospital’s New Intensive Care Unit, applying strictest attention to patient safety in every detail while creating a very hospitable, warm, bright, and non-institutional residential environment. The new work increases the hospital’s ability to monitor patients and at the same time creates a significantly more user friendly environment.
