CANADIAN HIGH COMMISSION, KUALA LUMPUR
TKearns Mancini worked with acclaimed Malaysian architectural firm T.R. Hamzah & Yeang in the successful submission of a proposal for the interior fit up of the Seventeenth Floor of the Menera Tan& Tan office tower in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The space comprises approximately 1,830 sq.m., and accommodates a staff of 40 people. Dr. Kenneth Yeang has since partnered with Llewelyn Davies, to form Llewelyn Davies Yeang.
Our basic objective was to design a functional, high quality architectural interior employing ecological principles and representing the best of Canadian and Malaysian design, materials, equipment and furnishings. Major consideration was given to the ecological environment which included not only the concept of energy efficiency and the use of ecofriendly materials, but also the design of a culturally rich environment which enhances the health and quality of life of its occupants.
This High Commission project won first place at the National Interior Design Awards Program, Malaysia in 2002 due to it’s highly polished and thoughtful interior detailing. Accommodating a very specific programmatic brief which must adhere to DFAIT standards meant the layout of the office space became a challenge. Security is an important factor in DFAIT projects and coordination of spaces must ensure the office is easily navigated and suits the end-users needs.
Key spaces, particularly public areas and meeting rooms also needed to reflect Canada’s image abroad. Creating an identity for the High Commission through a moulding of Malaysian and Canadian culture became the primary motivation for the design team.
